GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Residents may be re-thinking their votes after newly elected city councilman Rick Brainard is arrested.
Brainard was taken into custody around 6:15 a.m. Saturday morning, and is facing charges of third degree assault and harassment.
According to an arrest affidavit, Brainard and his live-in girlfriend got into an argument around 10 p.m. Friday evening.
It began as a verbal confrontation, then turned into a physical one in the bedroom. The victim claims she was pushed into the dresser several times, and Brainard grabbed her by the hair, face and arm.
Later on, the victim told authorities she was struck on her face, causing her serious pain and injury.
Brainard won the at-large seat for city council this past Tuesday, defeating incumbent councilman Bill Pitts.
Brainard's new term is supposed to begin in May.
