DENVER- The fifth annual GYT campaign is still running this April with online and on-the-ground initiatives across the country. GYT stands for Get Yourself Tested and the campaign promotes STD Awareness Month. This is a national campaign designed to promote sexual health and educate those about high rates of Sexually transmitted diseases.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that sexually transmitted infections are on the rise among young people in the U.S. Every year, there are about 20 million new infections, half being under the age of 25.
Officials say getting tested is a basic part of staying healthy. Many sexually transmitted diseases have no symptoms and getting tested would help you know your status. Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains say the sooner you know, the sooner you can get treated.
During last year’s GYT campaign, Planned Parenthood health centers tested over 332,000 men and women and held 300 events that reached to over 14,000 people.
