Parks and Rec holds 4th annual Jingle Bell 5k

A race in December? Normally that'd be crazy, but the weather seemed perfect just in time for the 4th annual Jingle Bell 5k Run at Canyon View Park.

Runners dressed in festive gear and headed out for a brisk 5k jaunt around the park, with children following with their own 1k event.

Officials at Grand Junction Parks and Recreation call the Jingle Run their official kick off to holiday festivities. Parks and Rec partnered with several sponsors including Roist Hurst Humane Society, and those who donated received a bonus raffle ticket.

"This year we decided to partner with Roist Hurst Humane Society. There are so many great charities around the holidays that people can give to, and I think a lot of times we forget about pets, too. They are in need as well, so I thought this would be a great opportunity for us to get some dog food [and] some donations for Roist Hurst," GJ Parks and Recreation coordinator Pete Ashman said.

For every 10 pounds of pet food donated, a runner received an extra raffle ticket for items from Chow Down Pet Supply, The Bike Shop and several other sponsors.
