A teacher at a local elementary school is behind bars tonight, arrested on charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a child.
42-year-old Dane McCabe is being held without bond on the charges after turning himself in Thursday afternoon. He was in the booking process late in the afternoon, and no booking photo was available.
We first told you of this investigation back in January. It centers around a young girl but *not* a student of his at the elementary school.
According to the arrest affidavit, McCabe had initiated an ‘inappropriate’ texting relationship with the victim, which included the exchange of naked pictures. The contact continued until late December, when the investigation by authorities started.
McCabe faces 7 charges including one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Child, a felony charge, along with 6 charges of Sexual Assault. The charges of sexual assault are for a victim between the ages of 15 and 17 where the responsible party is at least ten years older.
McCabe is listed as a 5th grade teacher at Pear Park Elementary school, but was placed on administrative leave in January. School District 51 says that remains his status as of Thursday Night.
McCabe has been with Mesa County Valley School District 51 consecutively since 1999. He taught at Dos Rios, and Nisley Elementary schools. He has been at Pear Park since 2012. He also worked as a substitute and home bound teacher from 1995 to 1998.
