TIps for picking your personal trainer

FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) -- With the warmer weather approaching, swimsuit season is drawing near. For many, that could mean heading to the gym and even seeking out a personal trainer.

There are many different reasons why people choose to be active, and there are even more reasons why picking the right personal trainer is so important.

Jody Turano decided it was time to start strength training, something she felt she needed for her health, but she wanted to do it right. That's why she decided to seek out a personal trainer.

“All these famous, wealthy people have personal trainers, so I thought, 'why not me?'" says Turano.

Turano turned to the Fruita Community Center and did her own interviewing when it came to selecting her personal trainer.

“I wanted to know what kind of training he had; I wanted to know what kind of people and clients he worked with. I mean, I'm not your basic athlete that wants to go run a marathon; I just needed to get strong," said Turano.

Turano wasn't the only one asking the questions. Trainer Clint Hawkins requires his clients to fill out a four-page paper about their health and medical history so he can customize their workout.

“Make it [workout] for your specific needs because not everyone is going to do the same workout. The workout should be designed for your specific needs," said Hawkins.

Hawkins has some questions you should ask when it comes to picking a personal trainer.

1. Are you certified?
2. Do you have a degree in the field?
3. Do you have any additional certifications?

Any additional certifications, such as contract and relax stretching, Pilates, and cancer fit training will show the trainer has more experience and can reach your specific needs.

However, Hawkins says certifications can give people a false sense of security and it's important to look at what qualifies a trainer to be good for the individual and their needs.

“That's why it's important to look for other things besides just being certified. Actually sit down and talk to them, see what their plan is for you what their experience is," explains Hawkins.

Turano is happy with Hawkins as her personal trainer. It has given her the strength she needed to achieve her fitness goals.

“I love having a personal trainer; it is the best thing I have done for myself in my entire life," said Turano.

If you are interested a personal training, the Fruita Community Center says you don't have to be a member to hire a personal trainer at their facility. They also recently added two more trainers to their roster due to an increasing demand.
