Pit crew CPR

MESA COUNTY, Colo. Mesa County Emergency Services are taking a page out of NASCAR's book this year with a new way of keeping you safe.

Pit crew CPR, as it's called, combines the urgency of a cardiac arrest with the precision of a NASCAR pit crew.

Before the emergency response crew even gets to the scene, each person already knows what his or her job is when they get there.

"The guys some of them were wondering whether it was going to work or not," says Grand Junction Fire Chief of Health and Safety, John Hall. "We're starting to get a lot of people to go wow this actually does work."

Crew members switch off doing chest compressions every minute and time their compressions to the sound of a metronome to ensure they're maintaining a steady pace.

The tactic was adopted by Mesa County on January 1st.
