DENVER (AP) -- -- Police say a 25-year-old man accused of beating an elderly man to death with a baseball bat in Denver told his mother shortly after the slaying that he was God and he had "killed the devil."

The Denver Post reports (http://bit.ly/16iqAVU) Zachery Joseph Cooper faces a first-degree murder charge for the death of 70-year-old Peter Morales on Tuesday. An affidavit says Cooper's mother told investigators she returned to her home near City Park after grocery shopping and found her son naked and "making comments about ... being in heaven and referring to himself as God."

She told detectives her son had been discharged from the military earlier this year and suffers mental health problems. Cooper had been living off and on with his mother and Morales.

Authorities say Morales' throat also had been slit.
