Suspect, victim identified in Orchard Mesa homicide

ORCHARD MESA, Colo. A man from Grand Junction is being charged with first degree murder in connection with a stabbing on Orchard Mesa early Sunday morning.

"I don't think it has hit me quite yet," neighbor Mariah Walker said. "Just knowing that someone in your neighborhood has the capability of killing somebody is probably the scariest part."

Lee McDonald, 25, has been booked into the Mesa County jail.

The Mesa County Coroner has identified the victim of the overnight homicide as Nicholas Allan Potts, 27, of Florida.

Police say they believe the incident began when McDonald assaulted Potts near Christopher Ct. and Santa Clara Ave. around 4 a.m.

"They were asking me what we observed or if we heard anything or saw anything early this morning and of course no, we were sleeping," neighbor Ken Schwietert said.

They say Potts then knocked on doors while running through the neighborhood with the suspect following him, but then died in the front yard of 1254 Santa Clara Ave. with what appeared to be stabbing wounds.

"There's kids running around everywhere," Walker said. "Everyone seems pretty happy and just to wake up and see this kind of thing... kids don't need to see this stuff."
