CHAFEE COUNTY, Colo. (NBC News) A popular trail head in Chaffee County, Colorado may now be permanently closed after 5 people were killed in a rock slide while hiking on Monday morning.

The accident happened near Agnes Vaille Falls, about two and half hours southwest of Denver.

A 13-year-old girl survived and was airlifted to the hospital.

The Chaffee County Undersheriff says some of the boulders that fell on the hikers are as big as cars and weighed more than a ton.

Now, officers say they will ask park officials to consider closing the trail head for good.

The cause of the rock slide is unknown at this time.

Today search teams will continue with recovery efforts.
