Class explains negative effects of pot on teens

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) -- The specifics of marijuana usage and legalization are still a little hazy, but the effects of the drug on the brain are certain.

Tuesday night, parents and teens get a look at how pot affects the way you think and act.

Deputy Chad Williams gave the presentation and hopes that kids understand that the decisions they make now could be life changing.

One parent said that he and his wife talk to their teens often about the drug, but they think further education is vital.

"When you introduce those neurotoxins, it hijacks that developmental system and corrupts it to some extent. Memory function in the hippocampus-- we are starting to see short and long term effects," said Williams.

Williams said tonight's meeting is not a response to Amendment 64, but the legalization may have an impact on how teens get a hold of marijuana.

Colorado is among the states with the highest teen marijuana abuse, and usage is increasing while the perception of risk is falling.

Crime Stoppers will host this same class again on March 11 at Canyon View Vineyard Church.
