Powderhorn hosts its first collegiate race

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Powderhorn's tough slalom is getting more recognition, especially after this weekend.

The ski resort hosted the Collegiate Ski Race Series for the first time.

Usually these races are held at big Colorado ski resorts like Telluride, but this year, 96 college racers from ten different colleges traveled to the Western Slope for Powderhorn.

"We're trying to do good things here at Powderhorn and help grow the resort and grow all the different activities that we have here," said Sam Williams, Powderhorn mountain operations manager.

Among the colleges that participated, our own Colorado Mesa University competed with 10 students, all of whom have all already qualified for regionals.

Powderhorn will also be hosting a couple more competitions soon, in case you want to catch some races.

The Buddy Werner State Championships Junior Race is March 3, and the United States Ski Association Championships for 9-14 year-olds will be shortly after.
