GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. A warning to those who spend a lot of time outdoors mosquito season is underway and it's your responsibility to keep yourself and your family safe from a potentially life-threatening disease.
Last year we had nine reported cases of West Nile here in Mesa County, including one death.
This year, those on the front lines of controlling mosquitos are saying it's likely to be a long summer when it comes to those nasty little insects.
"They are the number one killer in the world," says Grand River Mosquito Control Manager, Zane McCallister. "There's no getting around the fact that mosquitos are responsible for more deaths than all of the world wars and everything put together."
Experts say the size of mosquito populations tend to fluctuate with the amount of snowpack we get and this year, we had a lot of it.
But health officials say while you definitely should protect yourself, often times, West Nile is no big deal and some may never even feel symptoms.
