For this year's primary election, you won’t find any physical election center to cast your ballot. All votes in Mesa County will sent in through the mail.
The Clerk’s office is seeking public comment on the change through Feb. 24.
If you are affiliated with a party, you should automatically receive your ballot in the mail at the beginning of June. Election day is June 26, so it must be returned by then. Drop centers will also be available around the county as an alternative to mailing them back.
According to Clerk and Recorder Sheila Reiner, mail-in ballots were used during the 2010 primaries, and that method saved the county $250,000.
She said the office is just following the preference of voters.
"It really is more convenient for the voters and most people are really appreciating voting by mail,” said Reiner. “Even in a general election when we have to do the vote centers and you only get a ballot if you apply for one, 85 percent of the ballots we are counting these days are being cast by mail."
With this official change for the primaries, the generals will be the only elections with physical voting sites.
"In Mesa County, the first mail in ballot that we held was in 1997,” said Reiner, “and so every single election is held now by mail expect for the November generals that are held in even number years."
