Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) - According to, a recent survey says about sixty percent of people fail to follow the correct precautions to protect their homes from burglaries or house fires.

So here is what you need to know:

"Be careful with your wood stoves, get good maintenance checks on all your heating and cooking appliances, make sure you’re doing a good job with that. Keep those things that can burn away from things that are hot enough to start them on fire. If you go on vacation unplug all appliances." says Mike Page with the Grand Junction Fire Department. The fire department warns you to keep your trees hydrated with water and don't plug too many cords into an outlet or extension cord.

Kate Porras with the Grand Junction Police Department says to "invest in a timer for your lights that will have them go on and off during the day and night so they're coming on at different times. You want to have someone picking up your mail and newspaper so they are not piling up in your front yard, an obvious sign no one is home. Ask a friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your house. Have them watch for anything that looks out of the ordinary, anybody that might be coming around that shouldn't be."

Police officials say they have a free service where police volunteers will do a drive by your home to have an extra set of eyes on your house. To request a vacation check just call 549-5000.
