Rainfall in Grand Valley still below average

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Multiple cities in northwest Colorado and northeast Utah gained a significant amount of precipitation, but Grand Junction got the least of it all.

While the monthly average sits at 1.07 inches, the Grand Valley only received 15/100 of an inch in the recent storm, putting the total to 42/100, well below the September average.

Meanwhile, the yearly average to date is no different.

"For the year, we've received 3.02 inches, and the normal is 6.92 inches," said Mike Chamberlain, general forecaster at the National Weather Service. "We're almost four inches behind for the year."

The biggest impact of the lack of rain will fall on vegetation around the valley such as the pinyons and junipers in the higher elevations.

Conditions are not expected to improve in the near future. This coming weekend, the weather service says it will only get drier.
