Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) – Navy Jr. ROTC students in Montrose have made some robots that are making a big splash. The students demonstrated their Seaperch underwater robots in front of their parents and peers.
Parents and teachers watched a demonstration Tuesday at the high school. The robots maneuvered underwater in a 950 gallon "neutral buoyancy tank."
The idea of the project is to help students learn basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme. “Well, it's not your normal science class. You get to do hands on things. You're not reading from a text book all day. You get to experiment with things, you can see what works and what doesn't work so you get away from the text book and the normal science class," says Kaley Holyfield a NJROTC student.
Eventually officials hope the program will grow to somehow include middle school students by assisting them with grants, lesson plans, and robot or ROV construction training.
