Scheduling changes to inmate visitation

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The process for scheduling inmate visitation times at the Mesa County jail is different starting Thursday morning.

Officials say inmates get about 200 visitors a week and more than 100,000 per year.

Now, visitors must visit the Sheriff's Office website or go to a kiosk in the jail's lobby to schedule a time.

Previously though, they had to call the office during business hours.

"We've moved to video visitation exclusively about a year ago," says Sheriff's Office spokesperson, Heather Benjamin. "We don't have any face-to-face visits through the glass for families and friends, it's all done by video."

The Sheriff's Office is also implementing a new list-based system for visitors.

During booking, inmates will be able to make a list of 10 pre-approved visitors.
