GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The District 51 School Board released the official dates for the 2013-2014 school calendar on Tuesday night at the board meeting. The board put off the five-day extended calendar and opted for a transitional year with the intention of adopting the full calendar for the 2014-2015 school year.

Students will start one week earlier on August 12, but that is the only major change for next fall.

The school board hopes the extra week of instruction will help student performance throughout the year.

While the early start does conflict with some summer extracurricular activities, many parents said they were pleased with the transitional calendar.

2013-2014 School year dates:
Year start date : August 12
Thanksgiving Break: November 25-26
Winter Break: December 23- January 6
Spring Break: March 24 - April 4
Year end date: May 21

2014-2015 School year dates:
Year start date: August 4
Fall Break: October 6-10
Thanksgiving Break: November 24-28
Winter Break: December 22- January 5
Spring Break: March 23 - April 3
Year end date: May 20
