COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- A Colorado school district has responded to a discrimination complaint filed by parents of a 6-year-old transgender child who has been denied access to a girl's bathroom at her elementary school.

The Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/YAxkg6) Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 filed the response with the Colorado Civil Rights Division ahead of Sunday's deadline, but a school district attorney declined to release details of the document.

The New York-based Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund filed the complaint on behalf of Kathryn and Jeremy Mathis, claiming that 6-year-old Coy Mathis has been discriminated against.

The child is being home-schooled this semester after been denied access to the girls' bathroom at Eagleside Elementary School.

Fund attorney Michael Silverman says the district's response concludes that state law on the topic is not clear.
