Scout service helps a Western Slope school

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. One Western Slope teen helps a local elementary school prep for emergency situations and earns his Eagle Scout distinction along the way.

Dos Rios elementary honored recently graduated Fruita Monument senior, Kirk Mahoney for his commitment to improving safety at grand valley schools.

Kirk Mahoney gathered donations and assembled "lockdown" buckets for every classroom at Dos Rios to help teachers and students during emergency situations.

Inside the buckets are goods that will come in handy if students must remain inside for hours at a time.

"Things always happen unexpectedly and like our motto is be prepared. It's always better to be prepared and have things and not need them than need things and not have them,” says Kirk Mahoney.

The buckets include water, flashlights, batteries, trash bags, and several other items that are useful if students must remain inside for several hours.

The supplies and buckets were all donated from local shops and markets.
