Secession petition circulating the country

Not even a week after President Obama issued that challenge to kick off his second term, people in 22 states, including Colorado, have launched petitions to withdraw from the United States and form a new government.

On an online government site called "We the People," the creator cites the Declaration of Independence, which says "whenever the government derives from the powers of the people, it's the right of the people to alter or abolish it and institute a new government."

Seventeen of the states where the petition is circulating voted for Mitt Romney for president.

Here in Colorado, Obama came out on top, 51 percent to 47 percent over Romney, winning the state's nine electoral votes by just over 100,000 popular votes.

Right now, over 13,300 people have signed Colorado's petition.
