Sheriff's deputy injured restraining Denver inmate

DENVER (AP) -- Authorities say a sheriff's deputy was injured while trying to restrain an inmate who refused to allow guards to search his cell for drugs at the downtown Denver detention center.

Sheriff's Capt. Frank Gale says the altercation happened at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday at the jail on Colfax Avenue, and the deputy, who suffered a sprained back, drove to an urgent care facility downtown.

Gale says deputies found a single joint of marijuana in the cell, and the inmate will be charged with felony possession of contraband.

The altercation follows an attack on another deputy last Friday when a different inmate punched the officer in the face.
