GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Residents across the Grand Valley woke up to something unexpected on a mid-April day: a winter wonderland.

Overnight, the National Weather Service estimates that 6-7 inches of snow fell in the Grand Junction/Redlands area, while Fruita received at least 4 inches.

The snowstorm is most welcome to the Grand Mesa, which is seeing about 3-5 inches of new snow on the west side and 2-3 on the east side. That brings the grand total to 7-12 inches since Sunday night.

The snow is expected to continue in our area until 10 a.m., the weather services says. Mesa County, most of Western Colorado and Eastern Utah are under a hard freeze watch.

Tonight, Grand Junction could see temperatures as low as 24 degrees.

AROUND THE REGION

DENVER (AP) -- They cleared the snow off Coors Field in time for the Rockies to host the New York Mets, but large swaths of Colorado and Wyoming have a fresh blanket of snow.

Rocky Mountain National Park has already gotten more than 2 feet of snow and more is expected to fall through Wednesday. Southeastern Wyoming could also get up to a foot.

Blowing snow has closed some highways in both states and is causing delays at Denver International Airport because planes need to be de-iced.

The storm forced some Wyoming colleges and schools to close early Tuesday, and some state government meetings were canceled.

In southwest Colorado, La Plata Electric Association said blustery winds and downed trees were believed to have caused power outages affecting hundreds of customers Tuesday.
