Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) --- Over 100 Grand Valley residents will be sporting a new look today after shaving their heads in support of children's cancer research.

Participants raised money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation and then enjoyed a day of head shaving that was kicked off by Mayor Pro Tem, Marty Chazen.

Lead event organizer, Robyn Carmine, got involved with St. Baldrick's after her brother, Neil, was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma at 25-years-old. He passed away eleven months later.

"Watching him suffer the way he did is what brought us to do this," said Carmine.

Carmine was the second person to get her head shaved at today's event. But before going entirely bald, she had the barber draw Neil's name on one side of her head and the Saint Baldrick's logo on the other.

She says that while her brother is the reason she initially got involved, her efforts are for every child who suffers from cancer.

"Even kids that are cured and survive, suffer throughout the rest of their lives," says Carmine. "We want to try to find even better treatments to help cure the cancer."
