Many in the community are speaking out asking newly elected council member Rick Brainard to step down, but if he doesn't willingly leave office the next step for those who want him out is a recall and that will mean reaching into residents pockets to pay for the process.
According to the Grand Junction City Clerk petitioners cannot collect signatures for a recall until Rick Brainard has been in office for three months.
After the 90 day period, the City Clerk can release a petition and petitioners have 30 days to collect 5,326 signatures or 25% of those who voted in the last governor's election.
Funds for the recall will come from tax payer money, and the votes would likely be counted by the Mesa County Clerk and Recording office.
"The last municipal election that we held for them was about 45 thousand dollars so I am thinking it would be somewhere close to that," said Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Sheila Reiner.
