Storm drains not built for heavy rain

Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) --- A massive storm hit Grand Junction last night causing flooding throughout the streets.

The storm drains in the city were constructed by engineers to handle average amounts of water, but major storms lead to overflowing drains and all the water ends up on the roads.

Resident Bob Nozika has dealt with the street in front of his home flooding every year and said he wishes there is something officials could do to prevent that from happening.

The city has a budget to maintain the storm drains, but do not have enough money to revamp the whole water system as it travels from the desert all the way through town.

Darren Starr, Manager of Street, Solid Waste and Storm Water with the City of Grand Junction, said residents should report any flooding immediately to take the proper measures before the next storm hits.
