Tackling child abuse in Mesa County

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Child abuse numbers continue to drop in Mesa County, and one organization speaks about its approach to tacking this ongoing problem in the Grand Valley.

The Mesa County Department of Human Services is working in conjunction with outside agencies to help alleviate cases of child abuse by working on families in crisis as a whole.

Getting victims of abuse the services they need is extremely important, but it doesn't address the issue of why the abuse started in the first place.

Their new approach is all encompassing.

Human Services now examines the entire household to help eliminate the stresses that first triggered the abuse in each case they receive.

“Overall we're moving towards treating the entire family, not just putting it in a silo today and saying I only work with children, therefore I'm not going to work with any other types of programs,” says Angeline Roles of Mesa County Human Services.

County officials help with anything from parenting classes to employment services and it's made a significant change in child abuse numbers in Mesa County.

According to the Department of Human Services, there have been no child abuse fatalities in the past two years.

Overall, community awareness is increasing as well.
Welfare referrals are at an all-time high, showing the community's initiative to end child abuse in Mesa County.
