Team Codi takes the Special Olympics

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. One Special Olympian was the subject of a whole cheering section as she took on the 25 meter dash in Monday's games.

This isn't first grader Codi Mendenhall's first time competing in games, but it's the first time she has her whole class supporting her from the stands.

Her classmates, teachers, and family were dressed head to toe in "Team Codi" gear as they cheered her on.

"It has been an unbelievable experience because of the community support, the school support, the people that are here, the volunteers, everybody here to support these kids," says Codi's mother, Jennifer Mendenhall.

Codi is part of the Young Athlete's program for kids under the age of eight that want to compete.

Kids from every Mesa County school were represented in the Special Olympics, and officials say the event continues to grow because of increasing community support.
