Teens beat the heat with books

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Temperatures will be topping off at triple digits this week and many will be looking to cool off indoors. Now teens on the Western Slope have a place of their own, thanks to Mesa County Libraries.

The Central Library wasn't the only one who received a makeover, the teen room has been re-done and the changes are drawing in teens all over town.

Library officials say as a part of the expanded remodel of the central library, one of the new changes to the Youth Services Division was creating an area for teens that is closed off from the rest of the facility.

"It gives the teens a place where they can kind of call their own, that's just important to teenagers, anybody who's got a teenager, knows that they hole up in their room sometimes and have their space," said Bob Kretschman of Mesa County Libraries.

The teen room is 60% larger to accommodate the growing number of teens in the valley.

The new "zone for teens" has lounge chairs, computers, a movie screen and all of the books in the area are geared toward teenagers.

And officials say the changes are bringing in tons of teens.
