Time to get into back to school shopping mode

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Two of Melissa Richards' three kids are starting school in just a couple of weeks.

While vacations and summer activities have put a hold on her shopping she says she has a lot to buy before her kids hit the classrooms, "My six year old needs new shoes, new jeans, new everything. My 14 year old - he's got to be up to par with what's popular."

The Mesa Mall is the perfect place for Richards and her family as stores are pulling out all the stops this year to make sure students from kindergarten to college have everything they need.

Retailers around the mall are offering major percentages off summer outfits. Because of the early August start date the temperatures will continue to heat up through the first few weeks of school making shorts and t-shirts a good find for students.

"All of those stores that have great clothes all the time have great clothes on great sales so it's a good opportunity to get in for those," Chelsi Reimer, Mesa Mall.

The National Retail Federation says a recent survey found people will spend about $26.5 billion on back-to-school items. The average family will spend just over $669 on things like supplies, clothing and electronics.

While some may be behind in their spending the Mesa Mall expects a major uptick in foot traffic two weeks after the first day.
