Tip to keep pets safe after dog falls into frozen pond

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Delilah Aragon took her dog Samson to play and when she pulled up to the park he jumped out of the car and headed straight for an icy pond.

The ice crumbled under him and he fell into the chilly water. Before anyone could come to the rescue she said she ran out on the ice because she didn't know what else to do.

A passing Sheriff's Deputy also stopped to help and called the fire department. Fast-thinking that probably saved Samson's life.

The Roice Hurst Humane Society has tips to make sure this situation doesn't happen to your pet.

Having your pets stay inside will keep them 100% safe, but if they need fresh air make sure they have a collar and leash.

Per Mesa County's leash law, dogs are required to wear a leash when not at home except in places like dog parks.

f your dog is off their leash keep them by your side and if they're running around know their whereabouts.
