Unpaid workers file foreclosure papers against City Market

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Subcontractors who help build the new City Market by the Mesa Mall say they still haven't been paid and now they are filing foreclosure papers against the company.

Melvin Weaver owner of MK Services says several months ago he filed a lien against City Market in hopes of recouping around $100,000 owed to him by the main contractor Mark Young Construction but since nobody has place a bond on that lien, Weaver has since filed foreclosure papers. Weaver says the problem comes from a shady construction company hired by Mark Young. "City Market needs to make sure that Mark Young is paid everybody that did the work. Then if Mark Young has a problem with somebody else in the picture then he needs to go after them," says Weaver

According to local title experts, City Market can still place a bond on the lien that would allow the store to stay open and send the dispute to court. Experts say that process could take months.

The days of going to work on a handshake are over. When a sub of a sub performs work without a signed contract they may learn an expensive lesson.

This is not the only time that this has happened. The new BLM building in Silt is still unpaid for. The GC went bankrupt because they were never paid, over a year ago. That left all of the contractors unpaid. There are dozens of liens against this building, and the state is paying rent monthly. Who in our state government allows this to continue? Something needs to be done to rid the construction industry of the companies that cannot or will not pay for the work they request. Not paying for the services rendered leaves everyone involved hurting. And in this economy, we all need to be paid for work done. I hope the City Market issue gets resolved quickly, and I hope the BLM realizes they are are paying for a building that has screwed a lot of local contractors out of a lot of money.

I Could Not Agree More About This Issue. The Contractor or whomever that was supposed to pay these construction workers who did this building work for City Market better get off their lazy butt and pay up or shut down all of Kroger and City Market stores.Or City Market can take the contractors to court and sue the hell out of the contractor or contractors to make them pay up all of those construction workers so they can pay their bills and feed their families as well as fuel up their vehicles.

City Market could fix this mess. Close the store down on them and it will be fixed.
