GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – The emergency room at the VA Medical Center in Grand Junction will be open Thanksgiving Day for all veterans.

VA spokesperson Paul Sweeney says veterans should go to the medical center’s ER because under the Millennium Bill, a veteran can be responsible for all their hospital bills if he or she go to a civilian ER while a VA emergency room is open.

Call 911 for any illness that threatens “life, limb or eyesight,” Sweeney says.

However, the VA’s primary care and specialty clinics will be closed. Operations will get back to normal on Friday.

Thanksgiving also has special holiday visiting hours:

- Medical/surgical wards and ICU: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- In-patient mental health: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Community living center: per individual patient needs
