GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A mother who's been the center of a child abuse controversy learns her fate.

In a Mesa County Justice Center courtroom, Ashleigh Wallace was sentenced to six years in Mesa County Community Corrections. That facility provides custody, security and rehabilitation services for convicted offenders and allows them to maintain employment.

If she violates the terms of her stay, Wallace will have to spend seven years in a Department of Corrections prison.

On April 8, Wallace pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse and one count of attempting to influence a public servant, both class 4 felonies.

The charges stem from the abuse of her son Elijah in January. The boy was taken to the hospital on Jan. 13 for a broken right arm and severe head trauma, two days after the injuries were inflicted.

Elijah came dangerously close to death, and doctors say his condition would have been significantly more salvageable had someone brought him to the hospital sooner.

Wallace's former boyfriend Jessie Martinez also pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

It's unclear exactly how Elijah received his wounds. Martinez has repeatedly denied physically hurting the boy.
