GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – A miscommunication about a planned water outage leads to the closure of Holy Family Catholic School for the day.

From Thursday at 10 p.m. to Friday at 6 a.m., Ute Water had planned to shut off water in the 26 Road and G Road area while they tied in new water lines and re-pressurized them, according to Ute Water spokesperson Joseph Burtard. Crews are replacing waterlines throughout the neighborhood.

Burtard said Ute Water workers went door-to-door to tell businesses in the area about the outage beforehand, and residents were called about it.

Water was supposed to come back on at 6 a.m., but crews were running a little behind schedule.

When Holy Family Catholic School staff came in around 6 a.m. to find no water running in the building, they say they called Ute Water and were told that a waterline had broken. Burtard says the utility's answering service, Mountain Message Service, Inc., was giving the school conflicting information.

School officials then decided to cancel school for the day.

Burtard said the incident was a miscommunication between Ute Water and Holy Family, but the water utility has decided to make the most of it.

Since school is shut down, crews will be tying in the school’s waterlines to the new system today, a step that wasn’t supposed to happen until later down the road.

Holy Family should have water again by this afternoon.
