WELD COUNTY, Colo. (AP) 47-year-old Martin Braden of Aurora was killed on U.S. highway 85 north of Denver on Saturday afternoon after he was struck and killed by a pickup truck.

The pickup also hit a CSP patrol car, injuring trooper Scott Rendfrey.

Investigators are trying to determine if the 61-year-old pickup driver Dana Beales was speeding or distracted at the time of the crash.

Trooper Rendfrey was treated at a nearby hospital and released late Saturday.

The accident occurred around 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon on Southbound highway 85.

Trooper Rendfrey had finished investigating a previous crash and a tow truck was at the scene. One operator was inside the truck and Braden was outside sweeping debris off the roadway.

The state trooper was parked several hundred feet behind the tow truck in the left lane - with his amber directional lights on - when a Ford F-250 pick up truck in the Southbound lane failed to slow down when he approached the trooper and the tow truck.

The driver collided with the trooper who was in his vehicle and then struck Braden, who died on scene.

Trooper Rendfrey sustained moderate injuries and was airlifted to a Denver hospital.
