CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) A Fremont County woman is facing charges of animal hoarding and child abuse after deputies said they smelled an odor coming from a home and had to don hazmat suits before going inside.
The woman is facing a child abuse charge because her 10-year-old son reportedly was living in the home.
The Fremont County Sheriff's Office took 26 cats, two chinchillas and a ferret from a vacant home in Penrose last month. Deputies say the woman who used to live there voluntarily took 23 Chihuahuas to the humane society before allowing authorities to go in and take the other animals away.
According to KKTV-TV, Rhonda Bernard turned herself in at the Fremont County Detention Center on Monday afternoon.
