GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Every year, more than 20,000 construction workers are injured in work zone accidents nationwide. As part of Nationwide Work Zone Awareness Week, Colorado Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to take extra precautions on the roads during construction season.
Matt Will, the project supervisor for the I-70B project, said working alongside drivers can often be nerve-wracking.
“People go by us doing 50-60 mph and we’re in a 35 mph zone,” Will said. “You’ve always got to watch your back and se what’s coming down the road.”
Last year, there were 940 work-zone accidents in Colorado resulting in 108 injuries and eight fatalities.
Penalties often double for speeding in construction zones. Speeds one to four mph above the construction zone speed limit will result in a 120 dollar fine. Going 20 mph above the work zone speed limit will require a court appearance.
From now through the fall, there are more than 22 construction projects happening in the Grand Valley region. You can click on the document below to see a complete list of the projects.
