Denver (AP) An education advocacy group has taken the first steps to get a measure on the Colorado ballot that would raise taxes on oil and gas companies.

The Donnell-Kay foundation said Wednesday its proposal would bring in an extra $200 million a year and use it for education and for local communities feeling the impact of the energy boom.

Environmental groups have begun working to get other proposals on the ballot to increase energy production taxes.

Before a measure can be put on the ballot, it must be reviewed by a state board that makes recommendations on the wording and decides if it meets Colorado standards.

If the board signs off, proponents must then gather the signatures of about 76,000 registered voters.
