Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) --- Colorado has the second worst rate of prescription pain pill abuse in the United States and Mesa County contributes to those numbers.
In the last five years, law enforcement has confiscated seven pounds of prescription pills and this growing problem is attracting younger kids. The new drugs are choice for people under the age of 21 are Vicodin and Oxycodone.
Jim Shrant, with the Drug Enforcement Agency, said they are making serious efforts to get drugs off the streets by attacking this issue at all levels. The DEA partners with local law enforcement to focus on prescription manufacturers, doctors who over prescribe medicine, and people who take advantage of the system by trying to write fake prescriptions.
Doctor Marc Breen said he has seen many people come into the Community Hospital Emergency Room after overdosing on pills, which sometimes leads to death.
