Beijing (AP) The president of the International Olympic Committee is calling the turmoil over the Beijing torch relay a “crisis” for the Olympic movement.
Jacques Rogge is in Beijing and is urging China to respect its “moral engagement” to improve human rights and fulfill a promise of greater freedom for the media.
The route for yesterday's torch relay through San Francisco was changed and shortened to prevent disruptions by massive crowds of anti-China protesters.
Rogge says the San Francisco leg of the relay was not the “joyous party” hoped for. Still the ioc is relieved it came off without a major hitch and has decided not to cancel or curtail the remaining legs of the round-the-world event.
