Beichuan, China (AP) China has concluded a three-day mourning period for earthquake victims with a toned-down resumption of the Olympic torch relay.

The official mourning ended even as the government today announced the confirmed death toll from the quake last week has climbed past 51,000.

China's leaders are moving to contain any political fallout from the disaster, promising a 10-billion-dollar reconstruction fund, reining in the media and trying to keep despair from turning to anger in the disaster zone.

State-run media conducted unusually critical reporting early on, but have shifted to a more positive tone.

Families in at least two towns where children were killed when schools collapsed have protested shoddy construction and have threatened to take local officials to court.
