G-8 Endorses Halving Emissions By 2050
Rusutsu, Japan (AP) President Bush and the other G8 leaders have taken a cautious step toward tackling global warming.
The summit is formally urging major polluting countries to consider the goal of cutting heat-trapping pollution by half by mid-century. But the G8 did not make any binding promises.
That's sure to disappoint environmentalists looking to the G8 for concrete action.
But President Bush says only commitments that include China and India will do any good. The leaders of those two countries sit down with summit leaders tomorrow.
The White House calls the G8 wording “significant progress”, even if it's not as far as other G8 leaders wanted to go.
