Fernie, British Columbia (AP) Eight people are unaccounted for after two avalanches in southeastern British Columbia—and it’s feared some are dead.

Snow slides swept over 11 snowmobilers in a valley more than 500 miles east of Vancouver, near the Alberta border.

The three people rescued aren’t seriously hurt.

Police say some people were buried after they went to help those hit by the first avalanche. A search resumes at daybreak.

The Canadian avalanche center issued an alert Sunday saying mountain conditions in the region were “very touchy” because of a new snowstorm and a weak snowpack.
