Gaza City, Gaza Strip (AP) Palestinians report clashes early today between Hamas militants and Israeli troops in eastern Gaza near the border with Israel.

Hamas militants fired rocket-propelled grenades and mortars at advancing Israeli tanks.

Explosions could be heard in Gaza City as aircraft attacked buildings.

An army spokesman says Israeli forces have not yet entered urban areas.

Five Israelis have been killed since the offensive began, including one soldier in the ground operation. About 40 were wounded, some of them in heavy exchanges of fire near a militant stronghold on Gaza City’s northern outskirts.

The Israeli Army said it had killed dozens of armed Hamas gunmen, but Gaza officials could confirm only a handful of dead fighters in part because rescue teams could not reach the battle zones.
