NEW YORK (AP) - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is warning the Taliban and other extremists in Afghanistan they must choose between war and peace as the U.S. increases military pressure on them.

Amid an escalating crisis with Pakistan that complicates the Obama Administration's War Strategy, Washington is trying to focus on Afghan political reconciliation and regional support to help stop Afghanistan from backsliding. The U.S. plans to begin withdrawing troops this summer.

Clinton was outlining the approach in a speech Friday. She's also expected to formally announce that retired Diplomat Marc Grossman will succeed the late Richard Holbrooke as the administration's Afghanistan-Pakistan point man.

In the speech, Clinton is to say that Afghan reconciliation is key to lasting stability and challenge the Taliban to break with Al-Qaida and rejoin society.
