UPDATE: Prince William gives UK long-awaited royal wedding
UPDATED @ 11:09 a.m. LONDON (AP) - Britain's Prince William says it was a way of making sure that his mother, the late Princess Diana, “didn't miss out” on the upcoming royal wedding.
William says he's given his fiancée, Kate Middleton, the engagement ring that was once worn by his mother. It's an oval blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds.
He commented as the couple posed for photographers today in the state apartments at St. James' Palace.
Middleton acknowledged that being queen someday is a “daunting prospect.”
As for last month's proposal from William during a vacation in Kenya, she's not saying whether he was on bended knee.
Royal officials announced today that the couple will marry next spring or summer in London.
Prince Charles says he's “absolutely thrilled” with the news. His second wife, Camilla, says her stepson's engagement is “the most brilliant news.”
Middleton's parents are welcoming the Prince to their family. Her father says, “We all think he's wonderful.”

LONDON, England (AP) - A royal wedding is in the works. But we don't know yet what she'll be called - that's up to the discretion of the Queen.
Royal officials say Prince William and girlfriend Kate Middleton are engaged to be married.
Prince Charles' Clarence House office says the heir to the throne is "delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton."
The palace says they got engaged last month during a vacation in Kenya. They are due to marry next spring or summer in London.
The couple are both 28 and met more than eight years ago while students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
