The lighting of the world's largest clock tower marked the start of the holy month of Ramadan Sunday.

The tower is located in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam.

Saudi Arabia, along with other gulf states, will begin the Muslim fasting month today.

Ramadan is considered the holiest month for the world's more than one billion Muslims.
