Tunisia's new government falters

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) - Tunisia's day-old government is already down four ministers today.

The four who resigned had opposed the old regime and had been named to their posts yesterday.

Clashes broke out in central Tunis around the time the resignations were announced. Police fought off protesters demanding that the new cabinet be purged of the old guard that served the deposed president.

It isn't clear if the resignations could bring down the government, which has 40 full and junior ministers. But they do undermine the new government's hopes of quelling unrest by sharing power with members of the opposition to the old regime.

The president, who ruled for 23 years, fled to Saudi Arabia on Friday.
