Energy expo educates about local options

Oil shale, natural gas, solar, coal.

All are players in Colorado’s energy industry, and all are surrounded by some degree of controversy or confusion.

At the 7th Annual Energy Forum and Expo today, representatives from the industry came together to educate the public about the pros and cons of each source.

One major item of interest was the natural gas-fueled vehicles.

"We have been converting natural gas vehicles a little over a year. We have about 50 of our fleet converted right now," said Sandy Kent with Encana Natural Gas.

Encana was turning heads with its unique display: a truck and a car that run exclusively on natural gas.

CSU professor Bryan Willson, one of the forum speakers, gave a talk on the same topic.

"I hope the piece they walked away with today was how much of an impact we can have if we converted more of our vehicles from oil to natural gas," said Willson.

But the expo was about more than natural gas. Over one hundred companies and groups set up booths to represent their respective energies.

Founder Kathy Hall said her goal for the expo is to promote public awareness about all energy types and uses.

"We have to know where that energy comes from and how we're going to continue to generate the need. And we need to learn that it takes all forms of energy to get there," she said.

But guest Dick Knowles thought the expo missed one major point: reduction, not just production.

"I’d like to see the same companies beating the drum for conservation, but it's beating the drum for usage," said Knowles. He'd like to hear some discussion about cutting down on energy use in general.

"Technology is improving it, but it can't keep up with the population increase," said Knowles.

One point everyone could agree on: Western Colorado’s energy potential will be a discussion to continue far beyond today.

Hey Ray, how many people in this area, or even in the US does the solar industry employ? Can you charge your electric powered vehicle in less than a week with the energy your home system puts out, or run your washer and dryer at the same time? Stop trying to fill the american people full of BS and just tell them the truth! Fact is that to produce the amount of energy that just the US uses in a day would have the entire planet covered with solar panels. HMM-- wonder if we could prevent global warming by using the panels to reflect the sunlight back to where your head is???

Then "Forum" left me feeling hopeless about "our energy future" - Way too much: "Buy my stuff - not theirs" And Magical thinking. If you have the right combination of location/utility - The current "Grid tie-Solar" is the BEST investment you can make right now..Increases your home value many times - pays a dividend (tax free) each month - Makes money even while you are "out fishing" - no maintenance/25 year warranty for 90% efficiency - puts local AMERICANS to work - saves a LITTLE fossil fuel for the kids - AND yes the "Incentives" if you own a business on SOLAR it is even better...OIL SHALE -DIRTY COAL - A PIPELINE to a TEXAS PORT ETC. Wont SAVE us.....

Like I said, who can afford it? You make your money upfront, tax incentives now won't be tax incentives after the election. After you get their money in your account, you could care less what happens afterward. Alternative energy won't save us for sure, for all the money spent on alternative studies, there is very little to show for it. Alternative energy? What a joke you environmentalists have made out of it, at our expense.

Ray, you really need to lay off of the quotation marks. Just think of the energy you could save by not pressing that key so much...

It's a no-brainer that people would use energy that we could all afford, the alternatives people don't know or even intend to make A-energy affordable. The only track record we have of the A-energy crowd is the facts of how much they have cost the taxpayers, and they have nothing to show for all those billions, except products only the wealthy can afford.
